Body Remembers Trauma Therapy (BRTT) offers you a gentle yet effective way to relieve psychological and emotional tension. It targets the resolution of deep-seated emotional distress, chronic stress, and trauma. This method is based on the principle that stress, and resulting trauma affect the body’s physiological state, often causing it to lock into a state of distress or panic even when no real threat is present.
During these sessions, it is believed that stress or trauma-related hormones, like cortisol, are reduced, leading the body into a state of feeling safe or ‘at home’. This shift is crucial for initiating the process of healing and recovery.
Many people suffer from chronic stress and stay in this heightened state of alertness for longer periods. Nature is designed to manage short-term stress, but prolonged exposure can lead to significant issues affecting our bodies and minds. By reducing what is often considered ‘normal’ stress, we can stop these cycles of chronic stress and dysfunction.
As a result, you do not complete your bodily instincts and the tension you have built up now stores itself in the body. This creates blockages and restricts the flow of life energy.
Many people suffer from chronic stress and remain physically in this state for an extended period of time. The natural way for the body to release unnecessary tension is by vibrating the muscles.
In animals this is very normal, but we humans have learned to suppress it. Through passivity to tension and the suppression of vibration, we store this stress in our muscles and connective tissue. This can cause pain and both physical and mental problems.
The iliopsoas is the largest reflex muscle that tightens when tension or stress builds up in the body. As a core muscle, it is closely connected to the oldest part of the brain: the reptilian brain, also called the primordial brain. It thus has a primary role in the fight, flight or freeze response. The tightening of the muscle
This also happens when there are (childhood) traumas, (suppressed) emotions, negative thoughts, or when stressful events arise. Tension in the psoas can lead to an excessively arched lower back, lower back pain, hip problems, and a form of stiffness in the upper back. If the psoas is more contracted on one side, it can lead to shortening of the leg on that side. A shortened psoas muscle also complicates breathing and affects the digestive system and reproductive organs due to compression.
Due to the close cooperation with our nervous system, a tense iliopsoas can affect our psychological and emotional well-being. This can include depression, burnout, and anxiety disorders. With the right treatment, this muscle can relax again, reducing symptoms.
We start the session with a number of breathing exercises aimed at relaxation and connecting with your physical body. Then, I will guide you through a series of body exercises to perform in succession. These exercises activate the psoas muscle, a muscle in the body where a lot of tension, fears, and traumas are stored. Once the psoas muscle is activated and you have entered a state of vibration, your body takes over and begins to ‘search’ for where tension can be released.
Where BRTT and/or TRB can be applied:
You can extend this session with Breathwork. This combination is very powerful, as during the breathing session you go very deep into yourself. You descend into a piece of your subconscious and from there also physically release tension through vibrations and/or cramps.
You gain access to seven of the world’s fastest and most effective breathing techniques that you can practice anywhere and anytime to neutralize emotional blockages, calm your nerves, and enable you to move through life with strength and energy.
If you find it daunting to come alone, it’s also possible to come with someone for a session. It can be very beautiful and valuable to do this with someone you are close to. The condition is that you really feel comfortable and can be vulnerable with each other.
